The frivolity and the decadence of the ’20s was a direct reaction to World War I and the Spanish flu and all this death and destruction it was like, honey badgers no longer gave a shit. You can kind of see most of the 20th century as series of reactions to various disasters. I love this incredible photo.īut in a more general sense, I think the ’30s are my favorite era.

I am not particularly a big fan of young adult books nowadays but I will always pick up an Alice Oseman book. But after finishing it, it left me with multiple thoughts to ponder on and so, I decided to do a short post that may or may not be a review.Īs always, Alice Oseman never fails to disappoint her readers. Initially, I wasn’t going to review this book because I just wanted to enjoy the book. Is she destined to remain loveless? Or has she been looking for the wrong thing all along? My Ratings: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My Review:įirst chapter, first paragraph: BIG MOOD. With new terms thrown at her – asexual, aromantic – Georgia is more uncertain about her feelings than ever. No boys, no girls, not a single person I had ever met. Publisher: HarperCollins Children’s Books He's also been having dreams about a headless horseman chasing him. Quinn works at the local paper and immediately is drawn to the new reporter Kate. Unable to ignore her dreams Kate goes back to her hometown to try and solve the Lord Halloween mystery. When Kate was little her mother was murdered by Lord Halloween and he always told her he would come back for her. Our heroine Kate finds herself having dreams where she is being chased by a headless horseman and her mother is trying to warn and help her. You can call me Lord Halloween.īorrowing heavily from the Headless Horseman legend and adding some Jack the Ripper and Freddy Kruger elements, this definitely had a nice Halloween feel to it. You cannot stop me, just as you cannot stop change. By the end of it, five women, five men and five children will be rotting in the ground. I read this for the Modern Masters of Horror square for Halloween Bingo The Shatter Me series is perfect for fans who crave action-packed young adult novels with tantalising romance like Divergent by Veronica Roth, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Legend by Marie Lu. Tahereh Mafi has created a captivating and original story that combines the best of dystopian and paranormal and was praised by Publishers Weekly as "a gripping read from an author who's not afraid to take risks." But Angelina Jolie is miscast she pouts her way through the film looking like she's bored out of her mind. Washington does a good job as the paralyzed cop. The film's cinematography, production design, and editing are fine. Even so, good plot misdirection creates ample red herrings, so that the killer's identity is not a foregone conclusion. This could have been so easily fixed with the addition of a line or two of dialogue and/or a brief added scene near the film's beginning. But, the solution to the whodunit puzzle is ultimately unsatisfying because the screenwriter withholds important back-story from viewers. That inky darkness, together with a haunting musical score further amplifies suspense. In addition, the killer uses dark, subterranean spaces to torture and kill victims. That is the very definition of cinematic tension. From the get-go viewers understand that an intelligent maniac is on the loose, and could strike at any time. A bed ridden, paraplegic NYC detective, Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington), teams up with a rookie cop named Amelia (Angelina Jolie) to try and catch a serial killer, in this dark, moody atmospheric thriller from Director Phillip Noyce. Partly because this story is so incredibly entertaining (in a soap opera drama kind of way), I do have my doubts about the accuracies of its plot. The fact that college is the best place to do this is probably why the events of Facebook’s creation (as well as the Winklevoss’ failed website) took place there. Essentially told from Eduardo Saverin’s perspective, the impetus to attain coveted social connections so as to increase the chances of meeting girls is made clear right from the get-go. The one thing the book manages to emphasize more than the film is the “romantic” aspect of the whole endeavor. While the book doesn’t use Mark Zuckerberg’s legal troubles as a framework to break up the story as the movie does, both hold very closely to the same narrative. In fact, I think the strength of both works is due to the irony of the whole situation: an anti-social computer genius creates the largest social network ever. Even though both the book and the movie were created shortly after the meteoric rise of Facebook into the mainstream, the story is still intriguing and captivating. In standard fashion, I put this book in my “to read” list and waited until the audiobook was available. Upon a recent re-watch of The Social Network (2010), I came to the realization that the story was based on the book, The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich.
